Excel 97-2003 file refers to the file format used by Microsoft Excel versions from 1997 to 2003, typically having the .xls extension. This format is a binary file format known as BIFF (Binary Interchange File Format) and was the standard for Excel spreadsheets before the introduction of the newer format in Excel 2007. This version of Excel support 65,536 rows and 256 columns per sheet, as well as various formatting options, formulas, charts, pivot tables, and conditional formatting.
